" Enabling individuals to reach their full potential the 2nd time around,
The 2nd lap to a lifetime of potential"
What We Offer
At The 2nd Lap, we believe in the transformative power of second chances. Our mission is to support returning citizens as they reclaim their lives, providing the tools, resources, and community needed to help them realize their full potential.
With headquarters in Nevada and locations in Virginia and Texas, our multi-state presence allows us to address the unique challenges individuals face during reentry. At the core of our mission is a holistic approach that prioritizes job training, life skills development, mental health support, education, and stable housing.
Housing is a cornerstone of our program because it is often the first and most significant barrier to successful reentry. The rising costs of living and limited access to affordable housing leave many returning citizens vulnerable to homelessness, perpetuating cycles of instability and recidivism. By providing access to secure, affordable housing, we create a foundation for individuals to rebuild their lives and focus on their personal and professional goals.
We also prioritize mental health, recognizing the high rates of untreated mental health disorders and the elevated risk of suicide among returning citizens. The stress of reintegration, compounded by stigma and unresolved trauma, creates significant challenges. Our programs offer access to counseling, therapy, and peer support, ensuring participants have the tools to address these challenges and build resilience.
At The 2nd Lap, we understand that a healthy mind, body, and soul are essential components of lasting success. We teach healthy eating habits, guide participants in purchasing nutritious foods, and provide training on preparing nourishing meals. We encourage physical fitness and advocate for a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle as part of building a sustainable, healthy future. Additionally, we have partnered with a sports science company to provide marketable skills and trades, such as personal training certifications, that can be earned during incarceration. These certifications not only equip returning citizens with valuable qualifications but also empower them to land on their feet by becoming business owners and entrepreneurs.
Our leadership team is uniquely equipped to address the multifaceted challenges of reentry. Chief Operating Officer Shawn A. Barksdale brings a wealth of expertise as a certified Peer Recovery Specialist and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) professional. His deep understanding of employment discrimination and systemic barriers equips The 2nd Lap to advocate for equitable opportunities and create solutions that empower returning citizens to navigate these challenges effectively. His lived experience and certifications reinforce our mission to foster meaningful change with empathy and understanding.
Furthermore, we address the systemic and personal obstacles that men, in particular, face upon reentry. From societal expectations to employment discrimination, these challenges often hinder progress. At The 2nd Lap, we equip individuals with life skills, mentorship, and opportunities that empower them to overcome these hurdles and redefine their futures.
Founded by Amir Tariq-Brown, The 2nd Lap is more than a nonprofit—it is a community dedicated to turning a second chance into a lifetime of opportunities. Together, we inspire transformation, foster hope, and champion resilience, ensuring no one walks their second lap alone.
